Can Window Film Create a One-Way Privacy Effect?

A common question we receive is “Can window film give me privacy?”  This question is usually followed up by “I want to see out, but I don’t want people to see in.” At Window Film Systems, we offer several one-way window film options, with the added benefit of providing privacy while still allowing natural light in.

How One-Way Window Film Works

The challenge with creating privacy while still being able to see outside is that one-way window film is designed to be reflective to the greater light source.  As a result, window film can increase privacy during the day when the sun is shining outside but at night the reverse is true when the lights are on inside and it’s dark outside. To understand this further, look at a typical commercial office tower.  It is difficult to see inside by day but when it’s dark out and the lights are on inside the building, you can see into it quite clearly.

Reflective Solar Film for Privacy

First generation one-way solar film is reflective due to the manufacturing process.  Solar control window films are designed to keep heat out.   Solar film is made by vaporizing a metalized coating onto a polyester film and in most cases, this vaporized metal makes the film reflective.  That reflectivity creates a one-way privacy effect, under specific light conditions.

Perforated Window Film Creates One-Way Privacy Effect

An alternate solution to using reflective window film for daytime privacy in commercial situations is a perforated exterior window film. Perforated window film offers a clever way to use a graphic element in combination with a series of small holes over the surface of the window film to draw a viewer’s eyes to the graphic rather than through the glass. Viewed from the inside, perforated window film has a black tint (see-through) appearance that provides excellent daytime privacy. The added benefits of this privacy window film is a reduction in solar heat gain, glare and UV radiation. All of these benefiting factors contribute to perforated films being a custom film solution worth considering.
