Privacy Film FAQs

Privacy window film installed in an office

Q:

Can you see through privacy window film?

A:

It all depends on the level of privacy you are looking to achieve. Balancing aesthetic and function is an individual choice. In some cases, however, we can use the reflective nature of one of our films to achieve daytime privacy. If frosting is applied to window film in any degree, it provides a degree of privacy that can make your space feel more comfortable. Frosted privacy film is also available in a wide range of opacities, which provides a wide range of privacy options – from barely there to whiteout.

Q:

Does mirrored window film provide privacy at night?

A:

No, mirrored window film does not provide adequate privacy at night. The reflection is created using the greatest source of light, so the reflection turns inside at night. Once the lights are turned on, your windows virtually turn into mirrors. Window coverings are recommended to have privacy at night.

In some instances, you are able to trick the film by adding exterior soffit lighting to increase the lighting at night, however, there is no guarantee this practice will work in providing privacy.

Q:

What is the difference between opaque and frosted glass?

A:

Frosted glass is often considered an etched glass; however, frosted glass is also considered a type of opacity or pattern when referring to window film. With professional window film, we can replicate a similar level of opacity of frosted glass in a window film that can be applied to a glass window or surface without affecting the glass. Opaque glass is a similar term, opaque means that you are unable to see through. As with frosted glass, the look and functionality of opaque glass can be achieved with professional window film to achieve more private working spaces.

Q:

What is the difference between frosted glass and translucent glass?

A:

As mentioned above, frosted glass refers to a level of opacity, whereas translucent glass refers to a textural component to glass. Typically referred to as decorative glass, patterned or embedded glass, this is achieved by applying a finish to one side of a sheet of glass, either by sandblasting or with the use of a roller to create a decorative finish. Window films cannot achieve the same textural qualities of translucent glass as it is a textural finish applied to a glass surface.
